The School of Medicine Columbia continues to work closely with the University of South Carolina leadership as we respond to the novel coronavirus outbreak. We are following their recommendations to help ensure the health and safety of our community.

Required Monthly Testing

Due to a surge with the omicron variant, USC will continue with monthly testing of all students, faculty, and staff beginning the week of January 17th. We will now offer weekly SAFE saliva testing every Wednesday from 1-3pm in the MII classroom. There will be no nasal testing this semester.

Students

Students will receive a notification email the week that they are scheduled for testing, and they will have seven days to participate in on-campus testing or to submit documentation of outside testing to be compliant. Nasal tests, saliva tests and antigen/rapid tests are all acceptable forms of testing.

Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff will be required to be tested once every 30 days throughout the semester. Faculty and staff will receive an email once per month notifying them that they must get tested during the following calendar week. They must participate in on-campus testing or submit documentation of outside testing to be compliant. Nasal tests, saliva tests and antigen/rapid tests are all acceptable forms of testing.

SOM Campus Testing Information

Saliva Assay Free Expedited (SAFE) Testing

COVID-19 SAFE (saliva-based) testing will be offered every Wednesday beginning January 5th from 1 to 3 p.m. at the VA SOM campus. SAFE testing will be held in the MII classroom, which is located in the back hallway of Building 3.

Appointments are not required for testing.

You will need to bring your University-issued ID with you to the COVID-19 testing to allow for appropriate registration and tracking of your results. Also, be aware that you should not eat or drink, chew gum, or smoke for 30 minutes prior to your SAFE COVID-19 test.

Once your test results are finalized, you will be sent a notification to your university email account. Test results will be available in your MyHealthSpace account. Once logged in to your MyHealthSpace account, go to Medical Records on left-hand navigation or under the menu button (mobile). Then, click on the Lab tab. Your test result should be posted here. If you have a positive result, University Health Services will also contact you with guidance and for contact tracing.

As we move forward with offering testing at the SOM campus additional dates may be added in the future depending on the demand needed. Students, faculty and staff may also use other on campus testing sites or outside testing site. If an outside testing site is used you will be required to upload/submit documentation of the testing to be deemed compliant

Spring 2022 Return to Campus COVID-19 Requirements

All returning residence hall students, students residing off campus, faculty and staff must provide proof of one of the following by Monday, Jan. 10:

  • a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test collected between Jan. 3 and Jan. 10
  • proof of a prior positive COVID-19 infection within the last 90 days and completion of a 10-day isolation prior to move-in date
  • a completed COVID-19 vaccination record
