Our advisors can help students with many support services, including:
- Academic goal setting
- Navigating campus resources
- Course selection
- Major changes
- Tracking progression towards graduation
- Registration-related issues
Academic advisors work closely with all undergraduate students to make sure that their experience in our college starts strong from the very first day of classes. Faculty advisors help hone their class structures toward their intended career paths.
Both faculty and professional staff advise in the CEC.
You should know who your advisor is when you’re advised at freshman or transfer student orientation. After orientation, you will receive a follow-up email to your UofSC email account within two business days confirming your advisor. Once you’ve attended orientation, we recommend that you begin to check your UofSC email account regularly.
Initial advising is done at orientation. During orientation, you will meet one-on-one with a professional staff advisor. At that time, your advisor will evaluate any incoming credits and where they might be applicable for your major and will assist with course selection for that semester.
All students should be advised prior to the next semester they plan to take courses in. Typically, advising for first-semester students begins in the sixth week of classes as they prepare for their second semester.
We know that students have many goals for their academic experience. At orientation, you will be asked to complete an orientation worksheet and that helps our advisors individualize your academic plan. When filling out this worksheet, remember to include any credits you may be expecting (ex. AP, IB or dual credit) or any commitments that may impact what classes you can take in your first semester (ex. ROTC, marching band, varsity athletics).
